Sleep plays a significant role in memory consolidation.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The two most important stages of sleep for memory include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Slow-wave or deep sleep (SWS)\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early in the night we get into slow-wave sleep, while rapid-eye movement sleep happens later in the night .<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory has three components:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Encoding<\/b><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consolidation<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Retrieval <\/b><span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encoding occurs as you are forming memories, while consolidation is when you store memories and retrieval is when you access those memories while awake.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consolidation as well as memory transformation into long-term memory occurs in SWS.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span> During REM sleep those memories are stabilized.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span> Students who routinely get insufficient sleep perform poorly in school.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Memory-Enhancing Nootropics<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetylcholine is a very important neurotransmitter for learning.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-6\"><\/span> It improves the performance of our nerves and increases nerve transmission.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-6\"><\/span> This in turn enhances our memory and&nbsp; brain function.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-5\"><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, other neurotransmitters are important too, as they often work with or in balance with acetylcholine.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory-enhancing nootropics have cholinergic ingredients in them. However, if you use associative memory, you are much more likely to remember them. Associative memory involves connecting random facts together so that you can learn and remember them better. For example, if you want to remember a grocery list of 10 items, you can connect them through a story.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can do the same when trying to remember details about a new person you met. You can connect where you met them with their name. For example, you made a new friend named Steve at the concert. You can remember him by using the following associative memory:&nbsp; I met Steve at the concert where there was a stage. Stage-Steve.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associative memory learning leads to more neuronal connections in our hippocampus and is a very effective technique for remembering details<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-9\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Mnemonics<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mnemonics is a very useful memory tool that is used in learning complex science topics<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-10\"><\/span> Without mnemonics, it would be hard to remember lengthy information. Mnemonics can also be fun and humorous.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-10\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mnemonics involve using the first letter of each word and making a rhyme out of it. For example, learning the names of the eleven cranial nerves can be challenging.
