Here\u2019s how it might work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thermogenesis (Shivering and Non-Shivering)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold exposure activates thermogenesis, which is your body\u2019s way of producing heat to maintain its core temperature. This process keeps you warm and increases energy expenditure, making it a fascinating tool for burning fat.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two main thermogenesis types are linked to cold exposure: shivering thermogenesis and non-shivering thermogenesis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shivering Thermogenesis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you shiver or are exposed to cold, your body isn&#8217;t just trying to stay warm\u2014it\u2019s also working to burn fat. Researchers performed two different tests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first study, participants were exposed to a cold of 50\u00b0F (10\u00b0C) for 120 minutes while drinking either low or high-glucose beverages. And they\u2019re doing it for a great reason. Cold water immersion is excellent for exercise recovery and performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meta-analysis of 20 studies involving 419 healthy participants examined the impact of cold water immersion of less than or equal to 59\u00b0F (15\u00b0C) on post-exercise recovery. Researchers found that cold water immersion effectively<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-9\"><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reduced muscle stiffness<\/li><li>Alleviated fatigue<\/li><li>Minimized exercise-induced muscle damage<\/li><li>Enhanced athletic performance, helping athletes excel in subsequent workouts<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We turn to another meta-analysis for guidance on the best way to use cold water immersion for recovery. While based on a small number of studies, researchers identified the ideal protocol for exercise recovery with cold-water immersion: immersing in water at 52-59\u00b0F (11-15\u00b0C) for 11-15 minutes.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-10\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Immune System Support<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A polar bear plunge or even a daily chill in the shower could be a great way to support your immune system during the winter months. This might be counterintuitive since most people believe cold exposure makes you sick. And it\u2019s true that cold exposure, like exercise, temporarily weakens your immune system within a few hours. However, in the long term, both cold and exercise strengthens your baseline immune functions, which is why clinical studies confirm cold exposure\u2019 immune support benefits<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A study involving 3,018 adults explored the effects of regular cold showers on sickness. Researchers assigned participants to take cold showers at temperatures of 50\u00b0F and 54\u00b0F (10\u00b0C to 12\u00b0C) lasting 30, 60, or 90 seconds, or hot showers for 30 days.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-11\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All cold shower groups missed work significantly less often than the hot shower group, with a 29% reduction in sickness absence overall, suggesting possible health benefits linked to immune function.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers aren\u2019t entirely sure why cold exposure may help support the immune system, but there are some insights from recent studies. As we\u2019ve already covered, when exposed to cold, your body typically responds by shivering. This also triggers the release of cortisol and norepinephrine\u2014which are stress hormones.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-11\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study may provide insight. Researchers explored the potential immune effects of a 10-day training program that combined meditation, breathing exercises like hyperventilation and breath-holding, and cold exposure, including ice water immersion. To test their immune responses, researchers injected participants with a harmless bacterial toxin from <em>E. coli<\/em>, designed to cause flu-like symptoms.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-12\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trained group experienced higher adrenaline levels, which led to a rapid increase in an anti-inflammatory molecule called IL-10. Participants took a 5-minute bath in water at 68\u00b0F (20\u00b0C). Researchers measured their brain activity and emotional states before and after the immersion.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-13\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the cold-water bath, participants felt more positive emotions, like being active, alert, and inspired, and reported less distress and nervousness. Researchers also observed increased connectivity between brain areas related to attention control, emotion, and self-regulation.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-13\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study found similar mood improvements. In a study of 64 healthy young adults, participants spent up to 20 minutes in water at 56.5\u00b0F (13.6\u00b0C), with an average immersion time of about 18.5 minutes. The cold-water immersion group showed significantly improved mood, including reductions in fatigue and confusion, compared to the control group.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-14\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A possible reason for improving mood could be through a process related to the concept of hormesis. Hormesis refers to the idea that small doses of stress can benefit the body, while larger doses can be harmful. In the case of cold-water immersion, the brief stress of the cold stimulates the body\u2019s stress response, which, over time, can lead to improved stress management and mood regulation.<span class=\"custom-citation\" data-id=\"ref-15\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improved Sleep<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your body temperature and <a href=\"https:\/\/bioptimizers.com\/blog\/how-to-maximize-your-sleep-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleep quality<\/a> are closely connected.
