Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Techniques – A Method To Succeed In Any Area Of Life?

If you’re serious about your health, there’s a good chance that you’re spending hours each week in the gym training your body.  You’re lifting weights, doing cardio exercise, and performing stretching exercises that will help ensure you get into the best physical condition possible.  You train hard to be your best.

With this, you’re also likely eating a nutritious diet. You’ve trained yourself how to cook health and how to pick and choose which foods will serve your body well.

But, have you trained your brain?

Far too often, brain training is something that people completely overlook. But yet, if you don’t train your brain, this could be the sole factor that pushes you away from seeing the success you desire.

That is what we’re here to talk about today.  Neuro linguistic programming, or NLP for short, is one of the hottest techniques right now in the personal development field and for good reason – it works.

Nlp - Neuro-linguistic Programming

Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques Work & Can Seriously Better Your Life

When used properly, it can dramatically transform your life.

Think about it this way. There are two ways to live.

You can live passively.  Basically sitting back and watching your life unfold before you. You rarely take action to change or influence your environment and just live out whatever destiny holds for you.

Or, you can live actively. You can focus on certain elements that you want to happen and make those elements your new reality.  You can achieve what you dream about – shape your destiny, so to speak, rather than letting it happen to you.

Who do you want to be?

The most successful individuals in life are those that know they need to take action. They cannot simply sit on the sidelines, failing to make a move.

Neurolinguistic programming addresses this.

Still not sure why you should care about NLP?

Check out the video below that explains into more detail why it is a critical element of any personal growth and development program.

It will become crystal clear after you watch this.

Right now, let’s talk about how you can harness the power of NLP training and begin putting it to use in your life right now.

Neuro Linguistic Programming Basics – A Primer On NLP Training

Before we start talking about how you can use NLP techniques, let’s first clarify what this is in the first place.

You must have a firm grasp over what neurolinguistic programming is all about before you can begin to apply its concepts.

NLP begins with a simple state of curiosity.  You want to know how things work. Why do you make the decisions you do? Why are you choosing to react a certain way? Why are you where you are in your life right now?

After developing this high level of curiosity, you then use NLP training to develop physical strategies that help you combine the elements of behavioral psychology, linguistics, hypnosis, modeling as well as a good dose of common sense.

When you use NLP training, you are focusing on the attitudes that cause certain people to become highly successful, highly influential, highly healthy, and who have a happiness level that’s unmatched by many.

The name, neurolinguistic programming comes from the combination of neurology (your brain and body), language (the spoken word), and programming (how you connect the two).

Basically, how is what you are speaking/thinking influencing how you are acting.  What is the connection here?

NLP aims to address that.

What are some of the benefits that NLP can bring you?  NLP training aims to help people of all walks of life.

Some of the key things you can achieve with proper NLP techniques include:

  •   Accelerated rates of weight loss
  •   Improved learning capacity
  •   Enhanced self-confidence and self-esteem
  •   Improved states of mood
  •   Decreased anxiety
  •   Overcoming phobias
  •   Setting and reaching performance related goals
  •   Learning to listen more effectively
  •   Managing stress quickly and with ease
  •   Ease of overcoming bad habits (smoking, drinking, procrastination)
  •   Improve your interpersonal relationships
  •   Gain more power and authority as a leader
  •   Better identify factors that may be holding you back in your life
  •   Make better decisions
  •   Improve your business/career development

…and this is only the tip of the iceberg. Neurolinguistic programming has been connected to just about every personal development topic out there, so there’s no shortage of ways that it can be used.

5 Steps To Mastering Neurolinguistic Programming

Now that you know what NLP is, how can you master it?

By following a proven step-by-step system, you can begin reaping the benefits neurolinguistics has to offer.

Step 1: Be Prepared

As you begin your journey, know that this is NOT a quick-fix. You aren’t just going to think a few things and immediately achieve success.

This is a going to be a long path to transformation. You are going to have to put in some effort to change how you think and reprogram your brain.

If you aren’t ready or willing to put in that effort, you might want to stop now before you invest too much time in this. NLP is not for you.

If you are ready to work to see success, continue reading.

Step 2: Be Choosy Who You Learn From

Like any self-help theory out there, many people have hopped on board in hopes of making a quick buck.  You’ll find thousands of NLP training courses, seminars, books, NLP Training PDF’s etc. many of which really aren’t giving you valuable information that will truly transform your life.

You need to get choosy who you learn from.  NLP is a researched topic, so you need someone in the know.

The top NLP masters include people such as Richard Bandler, John Grinder, and Paul Mckenna.  If you are going to do further reading about NLP, these are the people who you’ll want to be following.

Step 3: Recognize The Many Paths To Success

One thing that you need to realize about NLP techniques is that there is no one technique that will fit all situations.

Just like there is no one specific diet that should be used by everyone, it’s important that you learn how to customize your NLP training to meet your own needs and preferences.

Likewise, there are so many different things that you can do with NLP, you should never feel limited.

There is a world of possibility once you get good with your training. Think of NLP more as a tool you harness as you create your path to success rather than a black and white roadmap that you have to follow.

Step 4: Expand Your Boundaries

When most people first begin with NLP, they come in trying to do one thing.

They want to shed 10 pounds.

They want to quit smoking.

They want to learn how to speak in front of others.

Once they’ve achieved that goal, they’re happy to go about their merry way.

To truly master NLP, you need to expand your boundaries. Realize the power of the human brain and all that you are capable of.

Think big.

Once you’ve reached that initial goal that you’ve set out, keep setting new goals.  Self growth is a big part of NLP training and this implies a constant stream of development that will take place over years.

Step 5: Commit To The Training

Finally, the last step to mastering neurolinguistic programming is to fully commit to the idea.

To really see maximum success, NLP should not be something that you just turn on at various points throughout the day.

You want to incorporate NLP techniques into as many areas of your life as possible. Your mission is to reprogram how your brain works, in a sense, and this is best done by continual and constant effort.

You’ll get out of it what you put in, so the more committed you are to using the concepts, the greater it’s going to help you in the long-term.

Neuro Linguistic Programming Examples – Create Change With These 5 NLP Training Techniques

Ready to put some NLP into action? Let’s look at five highly effective training techniques that you can begin implementing immediately.

Dissociation

This first Neuro Linguistic Programming Example is based around FEAR.

Think about your greatest fear.  Got it?

What are you feeling right now?

Chances are, you’re experiencing some anxiety, or a general sense of discomfort. You may feel like there’s a knot in your stomach or suddenly like a dark cloud has moved over your head.

Dissociation is an NLP technique that aims to help you overcome this as you objectively view the situation.

Here’s what to do.

  •      Begin by identifying the emotion you are experiencing and want to remove from your life. Until you fully identify this, you will not be able to dismiss it.
  •      Take a step back.  Pretend you are an outside viewer and imagine seeing yourself as you encounter the situation causing this emotion. Watch the event unfold before you, start to finish.
  •      Now you are to play that mental move only backwards.  Repeat it through once more.
  •      Next, do the same but this time, mentally add some funny music to the movie.  As you do this, you should feel the negative feeling lessen.  Keep replaying the movie until the feeling is no longer present.

While you may not cure a situation that causes you anxiety, fear, or feelings of discomfort with just one round of this technique, if you continue to do it, over time, you should be able to overcome the issue.

Reframing The Scenario

Next we have reframing.

Let’s say you’ve just encountered an experience that was far from what you were hoping for.

Perhaps you broke up with your significant other, lost your job, or you saw a stock you were heavily invested in crash.

No matter the situation, chances are you are thinking very negatively right now, feeling hopeless and like you cannot control the situation.

Keep on this thought train and the likelihood you just make the situation worse is incredibly high.  Most people do not make sound decisions when in this psychological state.

Your mission here is to reframe the situation.  Basically, view it in another light.

Let’s say you lost your job.

Sure, you can focus on all the negatives.  You’re out your pay, you’ll no longer work with your co-workers, you’ll now have to go out and search for a new job, and on it goes.

Instead, let’s focus on the positives.

You may be able to find a position that’s a better fit for you.  Perhaps you’ll find a place of work closer to home.  Or maybe, you’ll even find a position that pays better.

Instead of viewing this as a negative event, view it as a new door of opportunity.  Reframe that event and start focusing on the positive elements it has to offer.

The more often you do this, the easier it will be for you to start looking at the positive side of every situation.  This will totally change your frame of mind and how you react to the issue at hand.

Anchoring

Anchoring in NLP training is the act of attaching a sensory trigger of sorts to a certain state.  Ever seen someone put an elastic band around their wrist to snap whenever they had a certain thought or did an action they no longer wanted in their life?

That’s a form of anchoring.

To use this NLP technique to help ease stress and anxiety, here’s what you’ll want to do.

  •      Begin by thinking of a very happy moment in your life.  This could be anything from when you got married to when you first felt you were truly successful.
  •      Continue picturing that moment and begin describing it. As you do, wrap your fingers around your other wrist and give two squeezes. On that second squeeze, imagine the feeling of happiness intensifies.
  •      Continue doing this, each time you hit that double squeeze, feeling the happiness grow.
  •      Now next time you are faced with a stressful event or feelings of anxiety, wrap your hands around your wrist and squeeze twice.  You should begin to feel some feeling of relief taking place.

Anchoring is going to be most successful the more often the sensory signal is associated with the mental memory/thought associated with it.

So the more often you can repeat the squeezing the thinking of that happy memory to really connect the anchor to the thought, the better off you’ll be.

This technique is also a great one for using in your communication as it can be a way of reminding you to ‘cool down’ when moments get heated and take a deep breath to ease your emotions.

Building Rapport

Another way to use NLP is through the use of building rapport. This will help you with your interpersonal relationships and can also help you become more influential as a leader.

What this entails is mimicking the person that you are interacting with so that you can create a sense of deeper connection between you two.

There are a couple ways that you can go about mimicking the individual. They include:

  •      Mirroring their body language – if they stand with their feet open and turned out for instance, you should slowly transition into a similar stance (don’t make this too obvious of course!)
  •      Using words that tend to be similar. This will also demonstrate that you are actively listening to what they are saying, making them feel more heard

Using either of these two techniques can help you improve your connection, gain trust, and become more well-liked by people you meet.

Reworking Your Beliefs

One limiting factor for many people is the beliefs they hold.

Right now, think about some negative belief you have. This could be a belief related to your own skills or capabilities, a belief related to the environment/world in which you live in, or a belief related to others.

Chances are, whatever belief you are thinking about, it’s holding you back from seeing the success that you want to have.

Perhaps your belief is that you aren’t confident enough to speak in front of others. You always bow down from any sort of presentation, despite the fact that you know this could move you ahead in your career.

Likely, this belief that you are a poor public speaker has been brought on because you are continually focusing on that and seeking reassurance of that belief.

You may have had a situation in the past where you were up speaking in public and it didn’t go so well.

From that day forward, you feared public speaking.  Because of this fear, you became uptight any time you had to say something in front of others.

As a result, each following event strengthened your belief that you were not good at public speaking.  You basically brought it on yourself.

To help rework this belief, you need to look for signs of the contrary.

Really think hard about other times in your life that you may have spoken in front of others and were successful.  Focus on those times.

The more of these incidents you can think of, the better.

Your goal here is to point out to yourself that your negative limiting beliefs are not entirely valid until you are able to reshape them.

You might also look at those negative instances and really check to see if they are that negative. Often, it’s all in our heads.

Because we go in thinking it will be bad, we come out expecting this outcome and focus on any little thing that will strengthen that belief.

When you stop and reassess the situation, you may come to find that it really wasn’t nearly as negative as you thought.

The more you can focus on this, the weaker that negative association will become in your mind until you have successfully completed a belief reframe.

Reworking your beliefs can take some time and effort, but in the long-term it can really pay off and produce a high level of self growth.

So there you have a few of the NLP techniques that you can put to use right away in your life.  These are just a few examples of how NLP can be used, so keep in mind that if you don’t find any of these applicable, you can continue learning until you find one that is right for you.

Don’t underestimate the power of training your brain. Using NLP techniques, you can become the master of your own world and destiny.

Your mind really is the final determinant of your health, happiness, and success.
